It takes about 2.5 hours to get to Cesky Krumlov from Prague by car. Cesky Krumlov is a picturesque medieval town which is enscribed in UNESCO World heritage and famous for its castle and historical town center.
Cesky Krumlov is a medieval town located in the charming South Bohemian countryside that has still retained its medieval nature. Its historical centre was enscribed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in 1992. Cesky Krumlov is dominated by two national cultural landmarks - the castle and the Gothic church of St.Vitus.
According to a legend, the name Krumlov is derived from the German "Krumme Aue", which may be translated as "crooked meadow". The name comes from the natural topography of the town, specifically from the tightly crooked meander of the Vltava river. The word "Cesky" simply means Czech, or Bohemian.
The Cesky Krumlov castle built in the Gothic style is stretching over the meandering river Vltava. It was founded by the lords of Krumlov some time before 1250. In the 1680's, thanks to Johann Christian I. von Eggenberg, farming, building activities and arts flourished and Cesky Krumlov Castle surmounted the period of provincial backwardness, stagnation in economy and arts resulting from the Thirty Years' War. Johann Christian I. von Eggenberg transformed Cesky Krumlov into an impressive Baroque seat.
Over 300 buildings in the historical centre were included UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle is the second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic. You can also see the oldest Baroque theatre in the world there.
