Trip to Marianske Lazne from Prague

Marianske Lazne (or Marienbad in German) is a famous spa resort located about 150 km west from Prague. It takes about 2 hours to get to Marianske Lazne from Prague.

Sightseeing in Marianske Lazne spa

Marianske Lazne (also known as Marienbad in German) now stands in the shadow of the Czech most famous spa town, Karlovy Vary (also known as Karlsbad in German), but it wasn't always that way. First noted in 1528 by Bohemian historians, the town's mineral waters gained prominence at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries.

Nestled among forested hills and packed with romantic and elegant pastel hotels and spa houses, the town, commonly known by its German name, Marienbad, has played host to such luminaries as Goethe (this is where his love for Ulrika von Levetzow took root), Mark Twain, Chopin, Strauss, Wagner, Freud, and Kafka. England's king Edward VII found the spa resort so enchanting that he visited nine times and even commissioned the building of the country's first golf club: Royal Golf Club Marianske Lazne.

More about Karlovy Vary

Karlovy Vary (or Carlsbad in German), the most famous Czech spa town, is located about 120 km west from Prague - about a 2-hour drive by car. If you wish to take a bath in the hot spring water, a reservation in advance is needed.

Sight-seeing

Karlovy Vary is the most famous Czech spa town. It was founded in mid 14th century by the Czech King Karel IV. It was an open town, which meant both friends and enemies could come for a relaxing bath or health treatment. The town soon became well-known in Europe for the positive health influence of its 12 hot mineral springs. Members of imperial families from many countries started to visit it regularly. They always brought an entourage of artists, musicians, philosophers and poets. Nowadays the city is a colorful town where you can enjoy walking at colonnades where nobles once used to walk and drink water from the hot springs.

It is also famous for its glass production in Moser glass factory. Moser counts even Queen Elizabeth II amongst its clients. Another product typical for Karlovy Vary is Becherovka, a herbal liquer, sometimes jokingly called "the thirteenth spring".

The natural curative springs have been used to improve health for centuries. You can either drink the mineral water at special places at the Colonnades or you can take a bath in a spa resort - a reservation in advance is needed.

The Colonnades are meant for quiet walking while drinking the thermal water, which was and is a therapy emphasized by many spa doctors.
