Terezin was founded in the 18th century by Emperor Josef II, originally as an ingenious system of the military fortresses. It was also used as political prison. During World War II Terezin was converted into a Jewish ghetto and a concentration camp for Jewish people form all over Europe. More than 35000 Jews lost their lives there.

This trip includes a visit to the Terezin concentration camp and the memorial.

Visit to the Terezin concentration camp

Terezin was founded in the 18th century by Emperor Josef II, originally as an ingenious system of the military fortresses. It was also used as political prison. G. Principe who had assassinated Franz Ferdinand de Este died in the Terezin prison. During World War II Terezin was converted into into a Jewish ghetto and the concentration camp for Jewish people form all over Europe, where more than 35,000 Jews lost their lives there.

In 1947 the National Suffering Memorial was opened on this site, where thousands suffered. Later it was renamed Terezin Memorial. The key mission of the Terezin Memorial, the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic, is to commemorate the victims of the Nazi political and racial persecution during the occupation of the Czech lands in World War II, to promote museum, research and educational activities, and look after the memorial sites connected with the suffering and death of dozens of thousands of victims of violence.
